A recent survey by Telus Health revealed that physically active employees lose 10 fewer work days annually compared to their sedentary colleagues. The survey, part of the Telus Health Mental Health Index, highlights the critical connection between physical and mental health and its impact on workplace productivity.
Key Findings on Physical and Mental Health
The survey of 3,000 employees found that workers dissatisfied with their physical health scored 22 points lower on mental health assessments and lost 21 more days of productivity annually than those satisfied with their health. Overall, the average mental-health score among Canadians in September was 64.4, compared to 70.6 in the U.S., 64.6 in the U.K., and 61.6 in Europe.
Workers uninterested in improving their physical health also faced significant challenges, losing 14 more work days annually than motivated peers.
Additionally:
- 22% of employees reported anxiety.
- 14% reported depression.
- 13% experienced sleep disorders.
Employees without emergency funds were twice as likely to seek stress reduction or report a diagnosis of anxiety or depression.
The Role of Fitness in Reducing Stress
For many, fitness serves as a key stress-management tool. According to the survey, 12% of workers exercise to reduce stress, yet 9% never engage in physical activity. This gap highlights the importance of promoting accessible fitness options in the workplace.
Practical Solutions for Employers
Organizations can take actionable steps to support employees’ physical and mental well-being. Dr. Matthew Chow, chief mental health officer at Telus Health, emphasized the importance of initiatives such as:
- Virtual fitness classes.
- On-site fitness amenities.
- Well-being challenges.
“These initiatives create healthier, more engaged workforces while providing options to address the diverse needs and wants of employees,” said Dr. Chow.
