Hybrid work is decreasing across North America, with 60% of employees back in the office or on-site in 2024. This marks an 8% increase from 2023, according to a new report by ADP Canada.
The report, which surveyed nearly 38,000 workers across 34 global markets, found that 53% of Canadian employees now work on-site, while 47% still work remotely or in hybrid arrangements.
In the U.S., 65% of workers are now in the office, a higher percentage than in Canada. Among the surveyed employees, 28% of North Americans reported that they still have the flexibility to choose their work location.
Employee Engagement on the Rise
Despite the shift away from remote work, employee engagement appears to be improving. Globally, 19% of workers report feeling fully engaged, a 5% increase from 2020. Engagement levels in North America are slightly higher, with 21% of workers in the U.S. and Canada feeling engaged.
What’s Driving the Shift Back to the Office?
While the report doesn’t specify exact reasons, previous studies suggest that tracking employee work habits, collaboration needs, and organizational culture are factors influencing return-to-office policies.
Balancing Flexibility and Structure
As employers continue adjusting their work policies, the challenge will be balancing flexibility with in-person collaboration. With nearly a third of workers still able to choose their work location, hybrid work isn’t disappearing entirely—but its popularity appears to be fading.
