Foods to Avoid

July 6, 2024 From Epoch Times

In the United States, certain foods that are widely consumed have been banned in other countries due to potential health risks. These foods, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs), chlorine-washed chicken, milk produced with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), hormone-treated beef, and beverages containing brominated vegetable oil (BVO), raise significant concerns internationally.

1. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

In the US, GMOs such as corn, soybeans, and canola are commonplace, with more varieties, like GMO tomatoes, expected soon. However, GMOs face stringent restrictions in Europe and other countries due to health concerns. A 2009 review indicated that GMOs might impact organs like the liver, kidneys, pancreas, and reproductive system, and “may alter hematological, biochemical, and immunologic parameters.” Despite some studies showing no short-term adverse effects, the long-term health impacts remain uncertain.

2. Chlorine-Washed Chicken

American consumers often buy chicken that looks fresh and clean, thanks to chlorine-based antimicrobial treatments. However, research from the University of Southampton in the UK suggests that chlorine-washed chicken might not effectively kill pathogens. This method could allow bacteria to enter a “viable-but-nonculturable (VBNC) state,” making them harder to detect. Consequently, the European Union has banned chlorine-treated chicken, halting almost all US chicken imports.

3. Milk Produced With Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH)

rBGH, a hormone created through genetic recombination, is used in the US to boost milk production in cows. However, it can interfere with human hormone levels, potentially affecting thyroid function. Despite petitions and concerns, the US FDA maintains that rBGH is safe. In contrast, Canada, the European Union, and Australia have banned rBGH, although they do not ban dairy imports from rBGH-using countries.

4. Hormone-Treated Beef

US cattle are often treated with hormones like testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone to promote growth. These hormones may have adverse effects on humans, leading the EU to ban them in farm animals since 1981, citing cancer risks associated with estradiol-17-beta. The EU also bans imports of hormone-treated meat.

5. Beverages Containing Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO)

BVO, used primarily in citrus-flavored drinks, is an emulsifier that can negatively affect human health, particularly thyroid function. Although the FDA regulates its use, a 2022 study led to the FDA proposing a ban on BVO in 2023, effective from August 2024. Europe and Japan have prohibited BVO as a food additive since 2008 and banned imports of US beverages containing it.

Health Implications and Regulations

Long-term consumption of these controversial foods may disrupt the immune system, increase cancer risks, and affect overall health. Studies, including one from Harvard published in JAMA Oncology, have shown correlations between immune-mediated diseases and increased cancer risks. For instance, asthma increases lung cancer risk by 34%, while rheumatoid arthritis boosts lung cancer risk by 71% and lymphoma by 101%.

In Canada, regulations are stricter regarding these controversial foods. For example, Health Canada has banned the use of rBGH in dairy production and imposes rigorous standards on GMOs, hormone-treated beef, and food additives like BVO.

Tips for Avoiding These Foods

  1. Opt for Organic Foods: Organic options, though pricier, ensure higher quality and safety.
  2. Read Labels Carefully: Avoid products with added color additives, hormones, or antibiotics.
  3. Avoid BVO Beverages: Choose water or alternatives like coconut water.
  4. Select Non-GMO Foods: Look for certifications that indicate non-GMO.
  5. Minimize Packaged and Processed Foods: Fresh, whole foods are generally safer and healthier.

Understanding the health risks associated with these controversial foods and making informed choices can help mitigate potential health issues. Always prioritize quality and safety in your diet.
