Employee Pushback Against Return-to-Office Mandates Gains Momentum

January 14, 2025 from HRD Canada

The push for a return to the office continues to face resistance from employees worldwide. At communications giant WPP, a new mandate requiring employees to work onsite four days a week starting in April 2025 has sparked significant backlash, including a petition with over 14,000 signatures.

WPP Employees Voice Concerns

WPP CEO Mark Read announced the policy, citing benefits such as improved employee engagement, better client survey scores, and stronger financial performance. “Spending more time together is important to all of us,” Read explained in an internal memo.

However, employees argue that the mandate disregards their well-being and preferences. A petition on Change.org calls for WPP leadership to reconsider, stating, “It’s time to move towards a future of work that’s flexible, mindful, inclusive, and evidence-based.”

The Growing Trend: Return-to-Office Policies

WPP’s announcement is part of a broader trend among large organizations rolling back remote work policies:

  • Toyota: North American salaried employees are now required to work onsite Monday through Thursday, with Fridays designated as work-from-home days.
  • Amazon: Employees have voiced dissatisfaction with the company’s return-to-office policies, raising concerns about commuting, childcare, and mental health.
  • JPMorgan: The bank plans to end hybrid work and bring staff onsite full-time by March, citing a need to strengthen culture and team effectiveness.

Each of these companies highlights perceived benefits of in-office collaboration, such as efficiency, mentoring, and cultural cohesion.

Employee Pushback

Despite the justifications, resistance to these policies is widespread. At Amazon, employee dissatisfaction led to over 300 comments on the company’s intranet, prompting the announcement page to be locked. Similar concerns have been raised across industries, with employees citing challenges like commuting costs, work-life balance, and mental health impacts.
