The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted mental health in Canada, with claims rising by 132% since its onset, according to a recent report by GreenShield. This surge in mental health issues is taking a toll on the workforce, contributing to 62% of missed workdays, averaging 12 days lost per employee annually.
Impact on Employment
Mental health challenges have driven 50% of full-time employees to quit their jobs, with millennials and Gen Z workers being the most affected at 68% and 81%, respectively. Additionally, from 2019 to 2022, there was a nearly 70% increase in mental health practitioner claims reported by Sun Life.
Access to Healthcare
Compounding the mental health crisis is the difficulty many Canadians face in accessing healthcare. One in five Canadians, or 6.5 million people, do not have access to a family doctor or nurse practitioner. Among those who do, 40% wait over four days for minor health concerns, and 65% lack access to care on weekends or after hours. This shortage forces many to turn to walk-in clinics or emergency rooms, contributing to a rise in ER visits from 14 million in 2021-22 to 15.1 million in 2022-23.
The Role of Employers
Given the current landscape, it is crucial for employers to prioritize employee well-being. Digital health solutions are proving effective, with 97% of Employee Assistance Program (EAP) counselling appointments being accessed virtually in 2023. Harriet Ekperigin, Vice President of Mental Health at GreenShield Health, emphasizes the importance of accessible and effective workplace health solutions, noting that they can improve health outcomes and reduce absenteeism.
Benefits of a Healthy Workforce
Investing in employee well-being is not just beneficial for the employees but also a strategic business move. In an article for Forbes, Kara Dennison, CEO of Optimized Career Solutions, states, “When you prioritize the health and happiness of your employees, they become more engaged, productive, and will likely stay with the company for the long term.” This investment in health can lead to a more engaged and productive workforce, driving better business results.
Ensuring Success with Well-being Programs
For a well-being program to be successful, it must be holistic and accessible. Employers should consider the specific needs of their workforce and implement comprehensive support systems that include mental health resources and flexible healthcare options. By doing so, they can foster a healthier, happier, and more productive work environment.
